Reed protectors are put over the reed in the bagpipe chanter to protect the reed when the chanter is not attached to the bag. It is a very good idea to detach the chanter from the bag when you're not playing to keep moisture from accumulating on the reed; this also allows you to keep several chanters already set up and ready to go without having to worry about the reeds getting damaged. A must for every piper.
